glad you did.  and thanks to all who jumped in with advice.
it's very helpful.

given that it's a jam situation, with different players involved
each time, it sounds like the right approach is to lay low,
listen a lot, and try and pick up on what's going on around you.
if worse comes to worse, i might have to actually *talk to* a
guitarist.  :-)
